Istanbul is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural and financial center. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents.

PALAZZO CORPI
Beyoğlu - İstanbul - Turkey
GPS : 41°01'49.6"N 28°58'24.0"E / 41.030450, 28.973335

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM
In the year 1830, a young Genoese shipowner named Ignazio Corpi established himself at Constantinople with his mother, sister and one or more brothers. Signor Corpi and his family prospered, becoming prominent in local charitable activities on behalf of indigent and elderly Latin Catholics. The Corpis were instrumental in building the local Italian hospital, which functions to this day. In 1873, Signor Corpi called the architect Giacomo Leoni from Italy, and charged him with building a palatial residence that would bear the Corpi family’s name.
Georgio Stampa, another architect, who worked on the British and Persian embassies and other important buildings in Constantinople at that time, apparently also took part in Palazzo Corpi’s construction. Most of the building materials were imported from Italy - doors and window frames of rosewood from Piemonte, and marble flooring and facings from Carrara. The ground-floor reception hall was remarkable for the beauty of frescoes representing mythological scenes, while frescoes over the grand stairway and Great Hall upstairs represented Bacchic and other classical subjects.
To the magnificent frescoes were added finely etched glasswork, inlaid parquet floors, elegant fireplaces and other exquisite artistic/architectural features too numerous to mention. All the frescoes were executed by Italian artists brought to Constantinople by the architect Leoni. Sadly, during a "renovation" in 1937, the walls and ceilings on the ground floor were plastered and/or painted over.
Left untouched on the ceiling of the upstairs Great Hall, but vulnerable to annual accumulations of Istanbul grime, were depictions of Diana, Neptune, eight Muses, various Graces, Bacchantes and other mythological figures. These decorations remained largely hidden until 1992, when a series of expert restorations undertaken by post management with the cooperation of Turkish artisans and the Department’s Office of Overseas Buildings Operations gradually returned them to their original splendor.
It is recorded that Palazzo Corpi’s construction, which spanned the entire decade of the 1870s. The building was barely finished when Ignazio Corpi died, and the Palazzo was inherited by his nephews, who rented it to the American government starting in 1882. The circumstances under which the U.S. government assumed outright possession of Palazzo Corpi in 1907 make a fascinating and dramatic story in its own right.
Palazzo Corpi is an Italianate villa constructed in the 1870s in the historic Beyoğlu district of what was then the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The U.S. government leased the villa as alegation facility and residence and then purchased it from the Corpi family in 1906 for use as the embassy and official residence of the U.S. ambassador. With the move of the embassy to the new capital city, Ankara, in 1937, the villa became the U.S. Consulate General until its relocation to a new facility in 2003.
As one of the first real estate purchases by the U.S. government to house a diplomatic mission, the building is unquestionably imbued with history. That is why in 2004 the U.S. Congress required the government to maintain ownership of the property even after relocation of the consulate general. The site symbolizes the U.S.-Turkey relationship, from the fall of the Ottoman Empire and founding of the new republic to Turkey’s accession to NATO.
The preservation of the palazzo presented planners from the State Department’s Office of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) with a challenge and an opportunity. Responding to the congressional mandate, OBO signed a 51-year lease with a development company in 2008 to restore and expand the complex as a luxury hotel. Once completed, the project will include more than 160,000 square feet of internal space and house a hotel with 84 rooms, conference facilities, a club bar and two restaurants.
SOHO HOUSE ISTANBUL
In its work, the development company preserved historic details of the palazzo, which is protected under Turkish historic preservation laws. Experts worked for months to restore and renew such unique characteristics as the hand-painted scenes on its ceilings and walls, and its intricate plaster moldings and woodwork.
Two other historic structures on the site, the former chancery and annex, are also being repurposed. The annex was built as an apartment building during the same era and was later the home of the "Constantinople Club" until it was purchased by the U.S. in 1949 as consulate office space. It will now house the hotel’s suites and a café.
The chancery, an extension of the palazzo built in 1910, was designed by a Washington, D.C., architect who also designed the Washington, D.C., mansion that became the Turkish Embassy in 1932. It is now the residence of the Turkish ambassador.
The developers worked closely with OBO’s Architectural Design branch and the Cultural Heritage Program and Consulate General Istanbul, coordination that has allowed the CG Istanbul management team and front office to follow the work closely.
The latest outpost of Soho House, in Palazzo Corpi, has history in spades. Built by a Genoese shipping magnate with a penchant for Carrara marble floors and Italian rosewood, the palazzo served as the US embassy until its all-too-ostentatious location forced its move to safer suburbs in 2003.
Open since spring 2015, the palazzo’s renovated refinement pans from original frescoes to 1,000-crystal chandeliers. Contemporary accoutrements include a private hammam and a rooftop splashpool (watch the Golden Horn sunset as you cool off). However, Soho House is far from cheap, but even the budget-conscious might wish to splash out for a night in a room with Ottoman-inspired art-deco furnishings.
The club has 87 bedrooms, Drawing Room, Games Room, Dining Room, Club Bar, Embassy Club, Pantry Kitchen, Mandolin Terrace, Cecconi’s, Cowshed Active, Cowshed Relax with two hamam rooms and a 57-seat Screening Room

BÜYÜK BALIKLI HAN
Karaköy, Beyoğlu - İstanbul - Turkey

BÜYÜK BALIKLI HAN
Büyük Balıklı Han is one of the samples of cultural heritage of various civilizations of Istanbul. It was primarily built as a hospital and later used as a commercial center. The building was demolished and rebuilt twice, and the present masonry building was erected in 1875. It is situated on a rectengular area of 951 m2. The building consists of 6 floors, including the basement and has a glass roof over a large atrium.
The wooden building, which shared the same site with current building, used to be operated as Balikli Greek Hospital until 1753. In order to avoid the epidemics in the city such as plague, carried by those who arrived at the hospital by ships back then, the hospital was moved outside of the castle walls to Yedikule. In 1745, the patients with epidemic diseases were transferred and in 1753, the hospital personnel were relocated with all the incumbent physicians.
In 1762, the hospital came into service once again thanks to the support of Yorgo Stavrokoglou, a rich Greek public figure of the period. With Italian, Greek and Turkish elements, the name of the hospital was altered to Ospitalon Ton Gemicidon (Seafarers’ Hospital), with regard to the multi-national characteristic of the Galata neighborhood.
After the wooden building had burned down during one of the common fires in Galata, the hospital was rebuilt by Marko Kalfa with the support of Kirillos IV, the Greek Patriarch of the period, and Yakovos Argiropulos, one of the translators of the Sublime Port and with the financial contribution of Greek Community of Galata. It was put into service on December 1, 1814. The great marble epigraph, which was made in the memory of this incident, can still be seen in the inner yard of the Grand Balikli Inn.
The current building was restored in 1823 and slightly extended. After Skarlatos Stratis, on whose name the hospital building was registered, fled from Istanbul in 1825 to avoid arrest, the Ottoman government took possession of the unclaimed building and auctioned it. It was purchased by Rallu Yorgaki, another Greek rich man who ensured that the hospital was owned by the Greek community. The hospital remained in service until 1839. Since the Greek Hospital in Yedikule had a more extensive area and favorable conditions, the patients within were sent to Yedikule on February 14, 1839 and Galata Hospital was closed down.
Until 1873, the building was used as an inn with manufacturing shops and storerooms inside. After the demolishment in 1873, the inn, which is dated 1875 according to the inscription on the yard wall, was built on the same location as an income to Balikli Greek Hospital by Patriarch Yoakim II with the donations of the well-known Zagforos, Zarifi, Rali, Koronos, Hacopulo and Kazanova families, all from the rich Greek community.
Having been built by the Architect Aristidi Razi and completed in 1875, Grand Balikli Inn, which is now the property of the Balikli Greek Hospital Foundation, was registered as a historical building subject to protection in accordance with the decision of High Council of Monuments. There was a variety in the professions performed in Grand Balikli Inn in 19th Century. Almost all of the business men in Grand Balikli Inn were non-Muslims as was the case with the other inns.
10 KARAKÖY ISTANBUL HOTEL
Besides the main entrance on Kemeraltı Avenue, it has three more entrances saved in harmony with the original architecture. The rooms on the guest floors are lined in porticos as in the Ottoman architectural style. On the ceilings of the rooms, the original old brick has been protected as an element to enrich the interior design. The basement that is made of arched passages forms tunnels of large vaults. These vaults are kept visible to create an effect of the historical architecture.
The atrium at the main entrance of the lobby floor, which is paved with marble, extends the outdoor atmosphere inside. The pool embellished with bronze piscine figures is placed right in the axis of the main entrance, which refers to the original name of the building. The main restaurant-bar located on the 5th floor overlooks the Karaköy Port and the historical peninsula of Istanbul as well as the unique Galata Tower.
Stone cladding on the exterior of the building was refined and with required restoration the building has gained its original façade. The main concept of the architecture aims not to surpass the characteristics of the building but to remain in compliance with the historical values to stress the original architecture with well-selected elements. As such, bronze is one of the main materials used.

Hotel Büyük Londra owes its name to the tourism movement beginning in the 18th century when English people, as the first tourists of the West, began exploring countries like Switzerland and places like Rivieras. As a result of this movement, the first great hotels built in those places were named after cities in England.
At the end of the 19th century, as the Orient Express stretched as far as Istanbul, this city became a tourist destination as well and hotels began to appear on the northern part of the city, also called "new city", "Pera" meaning "accross (of Istanbul)" or "Beyoglu" at the same time. Hotel Buyuk Londra or Grand Hotel De Londres was one of those hotels standing on a hilltop overlooking the Golden Horn (sea) seperating the "old" and the "new" city.
Hotel Londra was built in 1892 by two partners named L. Adamopoulos and N. Aperghis in the place of the former residence of Glavany family, whose name was given to the adjacent street. (today "Kallavi street") The building was multi-storey and masonry which was rather new for Istanbul and had the latest technology of the time, including a hydraulic elevator and bathrooms with tubs (according to rumours, tubs with jacuzzis).
The interior also looked good with heavy furniture and ornate curtains. Moreover, the panaromic Golden Horn view was unimpeded and could even be seen from the lobby as the front side of the building was the popular Tepebaşı Park. It was because of this view that for some short period the hotel was called as "Hotel Belle Vue" instead of Hotel Londra.
Architect Semprini followed the popular eclectic architectural movement of the time; with the facade of the building very richly ornamented (thanks to the very soft stone used) which still makes Hotel Londra one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
Ownership and management of the hotel changed hands several times. According to an advertisement in the Istanbul City Guide 1926, the owner of the hotel was Moulatich. In 1930's the land registry records show the D'Andria family as the new owners of the hotel. This Levantine family carried the ownership of the building and its management until the end of the 60's, when they are supposed to have emigrated to Greece.
There is an interesting story of an American banker escaping from his country, which took place during the D'Andria management of the hotel. The banker escapes first to Greece and then to Istanbul with 198 million dollars that he acquired by illegal means. He chooses to settle in Hotel Büyük Londra. After bargaining for a price of 2.5 Liras from the rack rent of 5 Liras, he starts living at the hotel for one week before he is caught. Police searches the money everywhere, in every corner of the hotel, but they can never find it.
In the list of famous residents of the hotel, Ernest Hemingway is noticeable who was here for three weeks in 1922 to cover the story of progressing Turkish nationalistic forces for his newspaper Toronto Daily Star.
In this era, Hotel Londra competed with bigger hotels in the area such as Pera Palace and Tokatlıyan by its lower prices. In 1930's the hotel began losing its splendour as the new government of Turkey followed more nationalistic policies in economy. In 40's, the hotel was almost forgotten because of the WWII and its economic hardships. When modern and new hotels such as Hilton and Divan were built in Istanbul of 1950's, Hotel Büyük Londra had lost all its hopes for recovery.
In 1967, the Huzmeli family became the new owners of the hotel, but the glories of the past were only a memory then. The hotel passed through a comprehensive renovation in 1983 which coincided with the tourism revival in Turkey. This increased the Hotel's popularity and in a slow process reaching our time, Hotel Buyuk Londra became the meeting place of intellectuals, travellers and curious people.
When "Orient Express" reached Istanbul five years after its operation in 1883, the first hotels of Istanbul had already begun to appear, in the very cosmopolit westernized section of the city called "Pera". One of those hotels was "Hotel Büyük Londra" or "Grand Hotel De Londres", which soon after its opening took its place among the best hotels of Istanbul, together with Tokatlıyan and Pera Palace.
HOTEL
Hotel Büyük Londra is one of the few establishments managing to survive from that era to our time. Passing through many renovations, the hotel nevertheless still graciously reflects the atmosphere of the 1900's. With some of its rooms overlooking the Golden Horn and a lively bar, Hotel Büyük Londra is the meeting point of many people - local and foreign- looking for something different and special...
"This hotel is one of the most famous and popular in Istanbul, and certainly the best in its price-range. The beautiful building dates back to 1892 and is very tastefully and ornately decorated, with such oddities as parrots, gramophones and other strange items (portable coal burners!). The hotel attracts the artsy-fartsy crowd, including writers (Hemingway himself in 1922), artists and actors. The normal rooms are clean, the suites are quite plush with jacuzzis and nice thick carpets."
"This six-story, mid-19th-century hotel has aged gracefully. The rooms are small and comfortably worn, the furnishings heavy and traditional. The dark woods and velvet drapes used in the high-ceilinged lobby and dining room evoke an Ottoman Victorian era."
"Grand Hotel de Londres (Büyük Londra Otel), was the most prestigious establishment of Pera (Beyoğlu) for ages. This luxury hotel was built in 1892 by a Levantine family which was called Glavani. The hotel was decorated with the same style as that of "Orient Express" and is the only example which is still alive today.
Some of the 54 rooms in the hotel have a splendid view of the Golden Horn and the old Stamboul. The hotel is particularly well situated. it is just a few steps from the Galatasaray Square and it is in the middle of the Main Street (Istiklal Caddesi) between Taksim and Tünel. It is situated in the center of the old district of the Latins Christians. The theatres, the opera, the cinemas, the cafes, the taverns and the restaurants are all around the hotel in this district.

ATİK ALİ PASHA PALACE
Former 19th-century Ottoman palace known as Atik Ali Pasha. Built as a secondary residence near the Sultan’s principal summer palace on the Bosphorus converted to a Four Seasons hotel in 2008. Atik Ali Pasha Palace at the Bosphorus occupies a former 19th century Ottoman palace known as Atik Pasha. It was one of a group of several palaces originally referred to as the Feriye Palaces, built as secondary residences along the Bosphorus’ European coast near the Sultan’s principal summer palace.
Atik Ali Pasha Palace impressive, symmetrical façade faces the Bosphorus. At night, the frontage is lit by flaming torches - a spectacular welcome for those arriving for dinner via the Hotel’s private, waterfront dock. A 190 m (623 ft) wide promenade extends in front of the palace building. It is landscaped with lawns and gardens, bar pavilions, seating areas and a large pool with open views across to the forests and yalis that line the Asian shore.
FOUR SEASONS BOSPHORUS HOTEL
Two modern accommodation wings flank the back of the original palace. Designed as contemporary interpretations of old civic architecture, they include wooden windows and copper roofing with stone and stucco finishes. Together, the buildings line three sides of the landscaped gardens, steps and driveway that descend amongst cascading pools, fountains and mature trees from Çırağan Road to the Hotel’s lower, glass-covered entrance.
The Hotel’s interiors are inspired by their surroundings : shades of aqua, silver and taupe reflect the shimmering hues of the Bosphorus, whilst light marble and cool blue glass impart the freshness of a coastal resort. Throughout the Hotel, prints of the 18th century engravings of artist, architect and voyager, Antoine Ignace Melling, recall the glamour of the Bosphorus of old.
Decorative geometric motifs, hand-painted ceiling details, Turkish carpets and interesting marble inlays showcase the talents of local craftsmen and imbue an air of understated, Ottoman elegance. Achic city retreat on Istanbul’s glorious seafront, this converted Ottoman palace is surrounded by indigo waters and mountaintops. Visit the place where East meets West and the past meets whatever's coming next. Stimulating days and vibrant nights await.
Along the Bosphorus, in one of Istanbul's trendiest and most naturally beautiful neighbourhoods, find a former 19th-century Ottoman palace transformed into a hotel sanctuary of luxury and comfort. Experience a seldom-seen side of Istanbul, with legendary Four Seasons service there to ensure you enjoy every moment of your luxury hotel stay in Istanbul, Turkey.
