ZENOVITCH APARTMENT

Over 100 years old history reviewed with the house hotel... The House Hotel Galatasaray, which is the first of The House Hotels, opened in April 2010 in the renovated historical Zenovitch Apartments located in Çukurcuma which is a neighbourhood famous for its antique shops.

Zenovitch Apartments, or Appartements Zenovitch (originally French), was built in 1880 by Milo Zenovitch who was doing business in merchant shipping industry. Milo Zenovitch and his family came from Montenegro (Serbia) and settled in Istanbul when foreigners were allowed to settle here during the Tanzimat (reorganization) period in the Ottoman State.

The family also dealt with shipping business here. The smaller building on the left of the apartments was originally intended for the family themselves to live in whereas the Zenovitch Apartments were rented out for income. The apartments were rented by many people as well as the family members who lived in these apartments for generations. Later on, some of the family members resettled in France while the rest stayed in Istanbul.

HOUSE HOTEL GALATASARAY

Located in the artistic enclave of Çukurcuma famed for its galleries and boutiques, the House Hotel Galatasaray is the ideal location to explore Beyoğlu's bohemian culture and vibrant nightlife.

Renovated by our signature Turkish design collaborator - international award-winning Autoban Design firm - the building retains its original shuttered façade, marble staircase and ceramic tiled reception, while the 20 all-suite, all-double, high-ceilinged rooms are spacious, with striking freestanding showers. The lounge bar on the top floor offers outstanding views over Istanbul's red roofs and the Galata Tower.

The hotel offers boutique hotel qualifications with its 20 rooms in total, 2 of which are penthouse, a historical Galata Tower view and a lounge bar with a fireplace which forms a winter garden atmosphere. Having Mini, Deluxe, Junior, Executive Suite and Penthouse Suite rooms ranging from 28 m2 to 45 m2 which include comfortable armchairs, coffee tables, desks, a plasma TV with local and international channels to choose from, Italian marble use in the bedrooms and bathrooms, organic bathroom relaxing options and complementary espresso and gourmet tea service by excellent “butler” hotel service.

Zenovitch Apartments were abandoned for some time until the owners of The House Cafes included the building in the “hotel projects” and The House Hotel project by Autoban gave the building a new identity. The project lasted a very long time and could be finished in 2 years as the original structure was maintained with a very careful and detailed work.

The architectural character of the building reflects its original structure as much as possible and it was designed with a modern perspective where necessary but lacking parts were also added. The House Hotel Galatasaray creates a modern atmosphere in Beyoğlu with its wood parquet floors, the hexagonal perforated ceiling panels reflected in mirrors and the specially furnished indoors.

ADAHAN

Asmalı Mescit, Beyoğlu - Istanbul - Turkey

GPS : 41°01'44.9"N 28°58'23.4"E / 41.029139, 28.973167

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Adahan Istanbul is constructed 1874 in Galata-Pera which was the trade and banking center of Istanbul at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The building was designed by Stampa Brothers and Antoine Tedeschi in 1874. Housed in a charmingly restored 19th century building (built by the famous Turkish Jewish family Camondo as an office quarter) in the very heart of the historic and chic Galata district.

Adahan building used to be in the 19th century the town mansion of Camondo, a famous Jewish family with a tragic destiny. Comte Moïse de Camondo was born in Istanbul in 1860 into a Sepharadic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire and established in France since 1869. When World War I broke out, Nissim, the son of Moise was killed in an air battle in 1917.

After this tragic loss, he decided to bedqueath his property in France to the "Arts Decoratifs", in memory of his son. A museum opened in the the year after Moïse de Camondo died, in 1935. During World War II, his daughter, Béatrice, his son-of-law Léon Reinach and their children, Fanny and Bertrand, died in the nazi camps. The Camondo family died out.

ADAHAN ISTANBUL HOTEL AND CISTERN

The restoration in the building lasted five years and was carried out abiding by the original plans, and 47 units were created with different styles and surface areas. In this building, which has been used for different purposes over the years, the "hand carved decorations" which were covered under paint have been preserved as much as possible during the restoration, which contributes to the final decoration of the building.

Adahan Istanbul Hotel opened in 2013. Adahan Istanbul's unique interior design reflecting its "respect for the natural and the pure" continues in the building's public areas such as the parlor floor, meeting rooms, and the lounges.

Adahan Istanbul embodies several meeting rooms, lounges, brick walled basement which can be used for special events and a spacious roof terrace with an amazing view of the historical peninsula of the city where breakfast is served. The hotel also has a historical cellar where private events such as classical music performances can be held.

RESTAURANT AND BAR
Cachi Restaurant & Bar on the fifth floor of Adahan Istanbul, with a view of the historical peninsula, has a large terrace and high ceilings which embraces Istanbul. They serve you the local delights with different presentations.

ADAHAN CISTERN & CELLAR

Adahan collects rainwater which is cleaned and used in the septic system. For a final peek into the history of this amazing building, you could see into the well which is still in use today. The exact history of the structure under Adahan is unknown, but to my admittedly inexpert eyes it looks Byzantine. Well-preserved, the brickwork, arched doorways, windows, and the space itself are intact. The space is quite large and impeccably maintained and is sometimes used for events and art shows.

Karaköy, Beyoğlu - İstanbul - Turkey

The Haze Karaköy is an amalgamation of space between Karaköy’s Keçeli Han, previously utilized as a bakery, and the adjacent historic 1930’s Bobbin Factory, a prime example of Neoclassical ferro-concrete architecture with its distinctive 4.60 m high ceilings.

THE HAZE KARAKOY

This stove has been regenerated as “Forneria” which means “the stove” in Portuguese. On the other hand, the building which was used as a bobbin factory has the windowsills and vertical molding between the windows would indicate an Art Deco effect, as well as a reinforcement of perpendicular proportions associated with this.

In addition, the uniformity of the structure, and balcony above the ground floor would indicate a common feature of the period an “esoteric balcony”, as well as the obvious use of a cornice to emphasize the entrance to the building. In conclusion, the structure is an architectural example of a Neoclassical style ferro concrete edifice.

Located in Karaköy’s centre, right beside the harbour and straddling Necatibey and Maliye streets, each with 18 metre high facades, the building, with its 44 rooms and Private Terrace Penthouse Suite with Bosphorus and Golden Horn view also Private Terrace Penhouse Suites with Galata Tower view , is destined to make a lasting impression as it opens its doors.

GOURMET RESTAURANT & BAR FORNERIA

Forneria, adding Turkish-inspired touches to its menu of classic Mediterranean tastes, is opening a new and exciting page in Karaköy’s fast-developing world of gastronomy. Aside from the set ‘A la Carte’ menu, there are daily lunchtime specials, reflecting Forneria cuisine’s diversity, including new versions of traditional Turkish flavours.

For those living, working and, of course, visiting Karaköy, the morning service begins with traditional, daily fresh and totally organic flavours such as special homemade preserves, fresh daily clotted cream, Bodrum olives, and Afyon spicy sausage, and every lunchtime a choice of dishes are on offer for customers’ culinary delight.

With the dictionary meaning of ”dishes from the oven”, Forneria’s originality lies in its stone oven baked pizzas and delicious dishes slow-cooked in individual small pots. From seafood to whole wheat, there is an endless choice of pizza varieties at Forneria, and its signature dish of beer stew slow-cooked in miniature pots is not to be missed.

SUMERBANK BUILDING

The building is believed to have been constructed in the late 16th century. It served as the headquarters of Credit General Ottoman and Chemins de fer d'Anatolie (Anatolian Railroads) beginning in the second half of the 1880s. Prior to Sümerbank, the building also housed Deutsche Bank.

With different architectural styles catching foreigners' eyes, the historic buildings along Bankalar Street in Karaköy functioned as financial centers during the Balkan and World War I eras. In recent years, many of them, including the inns, have undergone renovation and been converted into art centers.

A most substantial building on Bankalar Street in the district of Karaköy, the Historical Sümerbank Building was built in 1867 by the Istanbul-born Italian architect Antoine Tedeschi in neo-Renaissance style. It has been the house of Credit General Ottoman, Deutsche Bank, and Sümerbank respectively. The Sümerbank Building is a first-degree historical monument.

HOUSE HOTEL VAULT KARAKÖY 5*

Vault Karaköy, The House Hotel is located in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Karaköy on Bankalar Caddesi, a convenient launching pad to explore bohemian Beyoğlu, historic Sultanahmet and the Galata Port.

Restored by the Agha Khan award-winning Turkish architect Han Tümertekin, the building structure retains original features, while the luxurious modern interiors were designed by Sinan Kafadar who was inspired by its imposing bank vaults, which also gave rise to the hotel's name. The contemporary classic room interiors also evoke wealth and luxury. An in-house art curator will organize events and exhibitions throughout the hotel. Also, a collection of precious books related to art, culture & music will be displayed.

Vault Karaköy, The House Hotel highlights Art & Culture, blending classic and contemporary styles, thus bringing together visions of Ancient and Modern Istanbul. Cemile Sultan Korusu, named after the daughter of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid, is an ideal setting for day - and night - time functions with its combination of history and nature and its view over the bosphorus. Princess Cemile had a mansion constructed on the seashore here, as well as a lodge with a pool on the hillside for use in the winter months.

Set over 25 acres of lush parkland overlooking the Bosphorus, Cemile Sultan Korusu (Cemile Sultan Grove) offers some of the best views in Istanbul. Constructed by Princess Cemile as a lodge, the original building collapsed and was later rebuilt. The Grove is located in Istanbul's Kandilli district on the Asian side.

The original lodge collapsed as the result of a series of natural disasters, and was rebuilt. After being abandoned to its fate for many years it was taken over by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC). Thanks to the efforts of the ICOC, one of the supporters of the Istanbul Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the park was declared a conservation area. Dozens of trees which were in danger of dying were rescued, and some 2,000 new trees planted. This attractive 25 acre park is a habitat for the diverse flora of the Bosphorus.

Boasting several restaurants, sports facilities, meeting rooms and beautiful gardens, the Cemile Sultan Grove is a popular function space and areas of it can be hired for special occasions. Dining options include Koru Restaurant, Hünkar Köşk, Sultan Köşk and the Taş Bar.

Cemile Sultan Korusu, offers various options for different types of events. La Vue Restaurant overlooking Bebek Bay on the Bosphorus features French cuisine and seats 250 people. In addition it has a cafe, TV room and meeting room. Sultan Köşk is a kebab restaurant seating 100, and in the same building there is a billiard room, games room and meeting room with a 30-person capacity. The Taş Bar restaurant seating 200 features live music on fridays and Saturdays and brunch on sundays.

Outdoors there are basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, a semi-Olympic size swimming pool and a children’s playground. The Kaptan Köşkü Meeting Room, which is part of the restaurant, is a special function area for up to 40 people and hosts seminars and group meetings. Another area that can be used for larger functions is the Waterfall which is called şehzade. This garden with a pool and waterfall can accommodate up to 1500 guests.

Esma Sultan Mansion / Ortakoy, Besiktas - Istanbul photo esma_sultan131.jpg

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Taking its name after Esma Sultan, the daughter of the 32nd Ottoman ruler, Sultan Abdülaziz, the historic mansion has bore witness to a number of historic events and figures over time.

Esma Sultan, born in 1873 at Dolmabahçe Palace, is the daughter of the 32nd Ottoman Sultan, Abdülaziz I. When she was 3 years old, her father was forced to step down from the throne, and Esma Sultan was sent to the Harem in Sultan Abdülhamit I’s Yıldız Palace. At the age of 16, she was married to Circassian Mehmet Paşa, an important political figure of the time, in the Ortaköy Mosque situated beside the mansion. The mansion was given to Esma Sultan as a wedding present.

When Esma Sultan died in 1899, Sultan Abdülhamit II passed the mansion on to his other daughter Cemile Sultan, and upon Cemile Sultan’s passing, it was imparted to her daughter Fatma Hanım Sultan. Finally, in 1915, the mansion was claimed from the Ottoman Empire, and in succession, was used as a Greek school in 1918, a tobacco depot in 1922; changing hands in the 1950s, it was used as a storage facility and carpenter’s workshop until it suffered a fire in 1975.

The three-storey brick building was designed by the renowned architect Sarkis Balyan and finished in 1875 next to Ortaköy Mosque. It was presented to Esma Sultan (1873-1899), the daughter of Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz, as a wedding gift. The mansion remained in the possession of the Ottoman dynasty until 1915.

Esma Sultan, is used today as a cultural center after being redeveloped. The Marmara Collection purchased the Esma Sultan Mansion in the early 90’s. The building’s original character and floor plan was preserved, as it adopted a new cultural identity. In 2001, Philip Robert’s project saw the building undergo renovations from within, gaining a sturdy, yet classy iron and glass interior. This renovation allowed for the mansion to remain open all year-round.

The building includes a bar, a restaurant, and an event hall at several levels. The building is situated in a garden of 2,226 m2 (23,960 sq ft). The ground floor is 31.5 m (103 ft) wide, 27 m (89 ft) long and 3.80 m (12.5 ft) high. The first floor is merged with the second floor, having dimensions of 31.5 m (103 ft) wide, 31 m (102 ft) long and 6.80 m (22.3 ft) high.

Esma Sultan Mansion, run by The Marmara Collection chain as a venue for various meetings and conferences, offers banqueting space in a historical atmosphere for up to 1,000 guests in the garden, 180 guests in the ground floor and 330 guests in the first floor. Space for reception is available for up to 3,000 guests in the garden, 300 guests in the ground floor and 600 guests in the first floor. The venue also hosts concerts of the Istanbul International Jazz Festival and the Istanbul International Music Festival.

The incorporated structure is built out of steel and glass within the original brick exterior. The glass box is tethered to the walls with suspension rods, which ensure that the structures remain equidistant from each other and are able to withstand bad weather and earthquakes. The building is set on several levels and includes a bar, a restaurant, and an event hall. The garden still contains the remains of the cistern, the Turkish bath and the stable.

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Kadıköy Old Pier (Eski Iskele), built in 1926, Kadıköy Pier is one of the most beautiful old masonry piers in İstanbul. Ottoman Maritime Administration, Fevaid-i Osmaniye, began ferry and passenger services from this pier in 1846. After years of service, it underwent restorations in 1959 and in 1986. The Kütahya tiles on the second floor dates back to the first half of the 20th century. It is noteworthy that the old pier of Kadıköy is influenced by the so-called "Ottoman Neoclassicism" and presents a perfect picture of the exotic Orient.

This isn’t a place full of archaeological or historical sites. Few tourists come here, however the locals frequent this place to ramble through the cozy streets and parks, see a beautiful embankment, which offers great views of the Sea of Marmara. Those who are looking for good quality antiquities will stumble upon many decent stores and shops. Others will seize the great shopping opportunities.

Numerous bars, cafes and restaurants, many of which occupy the upper floors of music stores and second-hand bookshops, offer good cuisine and drinks. Nightlife, due to the demands of the locals, doesn’t last for long here, so be prepared to grab a taxi to the European part of the city.

DENİZ PALAS

It was designed in the 1920s by Yorgo Kulutros and is embellished with Art Nouveau features. UNTIL only recently, the 90-year-old Deniz Palas in Istanbul’s Şişhane neighborhood was a perfect symbol of the city’s faded glory. Originally a grand apartment building that catered to the area’s once large Greek-speaking community, the edifice -  and the surrounding neighborhood - slowly slid into a state of decay over the decades, as political and economic turbulence drove the area’s original residents away.

Now, though, the building symbolizes nothing less than the city’s cultural resurgence. It was built in Art Nouveau style by architect Georges Coulouthros at the beginning of the 20th century.

IKSV - NEJAT ECZACIBAŞI BİNASI

2009 marked a turning point in İKSV’s history as the headquarters moved to Deniz Palas, in Şişhane. Titled Nejat Eczacıbaşı Building as of 2011. Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) moved to historical building in Şişhane, Deniz Palas. Deniz Palas now houses İKSV, which has been enriching the cultural and artistic life of İstanbul with festivals, events and leading organizations for several years.

Deniz Palas Apartment, spanned in seven floors at an are of  4200 sq.mt. is a meeting place for art lovers, in addition to the offices of the foundation as well as a cafe, a restaurant, the performance venue Salon and İKSV Design Store.

The IKSV Design Shop, displaying very special gifts and Peralı Café are located on the main floor. "Salon", the new performance center, is located at the entrance and the first floors and is designed to host classical, jazz, rock, alternative and world music concerts, theater and dance performances, activities for children, panels and conferences. It has a capacity of 250 people seated and 600 standing.

The fifth floor of Deniz Palas is going to host a museum dedicated to famous soprano Leyla Gencer, as of March 2010. Deniz Palas Restoran sited on the top floor and the terrace offers one of the most stunning views in Istanbul.

X Restaurant & Bar
X Restaurant & Bar is located on the top floor of the historical Deniz Palace. X restaurant & Bar is a pioneer with its unique style and atmosphere. Designed with acute attention to detail, the interiors showcase extraordinary architectural flair combined with formal and textural touches and acute and wide angles. The design reflects the contours and energy of Istanbul itself, with ceramics crafted by the İznik Education Institute, asymmetric tables and a triangular bar, as well as plates designed by İKSV Director General Görgün Taner and glasses selected from the Paşabahçe Special Series.
