MUHSİNZADE MEHMET PASHA MANSION

The grandeur of the Ottomans are kept alive with today’s luxury and comfort at Hotel Les Ottomans. Located at the most magnificent section of the Bosphorus, the “Muhsinzade Mehmet Pasha Mansion” has been brought back to life, as “Hôtel Les Ottomans”.

The Muhsinzade Mehmet Pasha Mansion was one of the most prestigious mansions of its time. The mansion and its annexes were built on a total land area of 4,527 sqm, where there had been remains from the time of Sultan Ahmet III, a fountain and garden sets. This exquisite fountain and garden were considered as finer examples of Ottoman style garden and water architectures.

The family lived at the mansion from 1790-1929 and then gradually left. Mansion and its land were rented out to a merchant to be used as a coal storage area. In 1935, it was finally being used for sand storage. In the 1980’s, 22 inheritors of the family came together to sell the mansion to an entrepreneur who intended to use the property in tourism business.

During their reign they enjoyed splendid architecture - gardens , pools, marble chiseled fountains - from the Ottoman period. The Garden of Muhsinzade built on this property was among the most beautiful and richest examples of 18th century garden architecture that Turkey has seen. It survived until early last century. The Ottoman period lasted a walloping 600+ years from 1299 - 1923 and Turkish culture takes it’s cues from the greatness of it’s reigning empirical years.

LES OTTOMANS HOTEL

After a long and sad hiatus in its history, the mansion came back to life, was converted to one of the most luxurious and exclusive hotels in Turkey. Remaining faithful to its original design on the outside, it was restructured inside as a journey from its origins in the past to the present.

This extraordinary hotel consisting of 10 original and unique prestigious suites opens its doors to welcome guests, with great Bosporus views. The decor of the rooms combine the Ottoman tradition and the pleasures of a luxurious life that will leave guests breathless.

ATİK ALİ PASHA PALACE

Former 19th-century Ottoman palace known as Atik Ali Pasha. Built as a secondary residence near the Sultan’s principal summer palace on the Bosphorus converted to a Four Seasons hotel in 2008. Atik Ali Pasha Palace at the Bosphorus occupies a former 19th century Ottoman palace known as Atik Pasha. It was one of a group of several palaces originally referred to as the Feriye Palaces, built as secondary residences along the Bosphorus’ European coast near the Sultan’s principal summer palace.

Atik Ali Pasha Palace impressive, symmetrical façade faces the Bosphorus. At night, the frontage is lit by flaming torches - a spectacular welcome for those arriving for dinner via the Hotel’s private, waterfront dock. A 190 m (623 ft) wide promenade extends in front of the palace building. It is landscaped with lawns and gardens, bar pavilions, seating areas and a large pool with open views across to the forests and yalis that line the Asian shore.

FOUR SEASONS BOSPHORUS HOTEL

Two modern accommodation wings flank the back of the original palace. Designed as contemporary interpretations of old civic architecture, they include wooden windows and copper roofing with stone and stucco finishes. Together, the buildings line three sides of the landscaped gardens, steps and driveway that descend amongst cascading pools, fountains and mature trees from Çırağan Road to the Hotel’s lower, glass-covered entrance.

The Hotel’s interiors are inspired by their surroundings : shades of aqua, silver and taupe reflect the shimmering hues of the Bosphorus, whilst light marble and cool blue glass impart the freshness of a coastal resort. Throughout the Hotel, prints of the 18th century engravings of artist, architect and voyager, Antoine Ignace Melling, recall the glamour of the Bosphorus of old.

Decorative geometric motifs, hand-painted ceiling details, Turkish carpets and interesting marble inlays showcase the talents of local craftsmen and imbue an air of understated, Ottoman elegance. Achic city retreat on Istanbul’s glorious seafront, this converted Ottoman palace is surrounded by indigo waters and mountaintops. Visit the place where East meets West and the past meets whatever's coming next. Stimulating days and vibrant nights await.

Along the Bosphorus, in one of Istanbul's trendiest and most naturally beautiful neighbourhoods, find a former 19th-century Ottoman palace transformed into a hotel sanctuary of luxury and comfort. SULTANAHMET PRISON

Sultanahmet Prison (Turkish: Sultanahmet Cezaevi), a former prison in Istanbul. It is located in Sultanahmet neighborhood of Fatih district on the historical peninsula. Built in 1918 / 1919, it was the first jailhouse in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, constructed in a contemporary concept considering the regulation of the daily life and relationship with the outside of inmates, who were awaiting trial or serving brief sentences.

The building was designed in Turkish neoclassical style in the beginning of the period called "First National Architecture". It was built next to the courthouse building, which was constructed in 1845 initially as university (Ottoman Turkish: Darülfünun). An inscription in Ottoman language upon the main gate of the building states the name of the facility as the "Capital City Murder Jail" (Ottoman Turkish: Dersaadet Cinayet Tevkifhanesi). It is a four-story building with guard towers enclosing a courtyard.

In the jailhouse, juveniles and women were also detained. Following the establishment of the Sağmalcılar Prison, the inmates were transferred to the new site and the jail was abandoned on January 25, 1969. Later during the military rule, the building continued to be used as a military jailhouse.

FOUR SEASONS İSTANBUL HOTEL 5*

In 1992, after a long period of neglect, a redevelopment project was considered to convert the building into a hotel. The jailhouse, having great significance in terms of history of art and architecture, was renovated and opened in 1996 as a deluxe hotel of the Toronto-based Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts chain.

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet is an intimate retreat of just 65 rooms and suites located in a former prison in the centre of Istanbul’s Old Town. The three-storey, neo-classic building wraps around a landscaped, courtyard garden - formerly the prisoners’ exercise yard - and neighbours some of the city’s most impressive historical monuments. Opened in 1996, the Hotel is one of the jewels in Four Seasons’ crown, most recently named "Best Small Hotel in Europe - 2012 by Travel & Leisure’s coveted annual readers" poll.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Topkapı Palace, Haghia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are just a couple of minutes stroll from the Hotel. In keeping with this privileged location, the Hotel’s interiors and decoration pay homage to the city’s rich Ottoman heritage. Shuttered windows and arched doorways open to reveal well-lit, uncluttered spaces; decorative Ottoman artefacts and antique rugs are incorporated amongst neoclassical furniture and welcoming Turkish sofas. The resultant effect exudes an easy, homely ambience that belies the exclusivity of the address.

The Hotel’s restaurant, Seasons, is located within a glass pavilion that forms the focal point of the lush, courtyard garden; here, International and Turkish fine dining come together. Turkish traditions are also evident throughout the Hotel in the warmth of the welcome and consistently high level of service – both exceptional, even by Four Seasons’ standards.

Inside, the prison’s original wooden doors, a multiple-arched hallway opens onto a series of inviting lounges - simple and relaxing yet richly decorated with Ottoman tapestries, antique rugs and paintings. Ottoman traditions are further mirrored in the mural-style artworks by Timur Kerim Incedayi, which also complement the cosy, residential appeal of the ‘Blue Room’ lounge and lobby areas.

Sensitively preserved details throughout the Hotel recall its fascinating history: from the courtyard watchtowers (now housing the elevators) to torque-like brass rings and an inmate’s poignant engraving on an old marble pillar. The use of local materials and decorative geometric motifs further evoke Turkey’s rich history and link the regenerated interiors to the traditional artefacts on display.

The Hotel features a total of 347 windows - a surprising number considering its size and previous use. Light and airy interiors are decorated in warm, natural tones, which defer to the vibrant beauty of the landscaped courtyard and historical monuments beyond. Three-dimensional mosaic artworks by local artist, Hulya Vurnal Ikizgul, bring a simple yet powerful beauty to alcoves and walls both within the Hotel and courtyard, providing an appealing synergy between the indoor and outdoor areas.

Adile Sultan Palace / Kandilli, Uskudat - Istanbul photo adilesultan_palace115.jpg

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Adile Sultan Palace is a former royal residence, which was used later as a school building, and is a cultural centre today located in Kandilli neighbourhood of İstanbul, Turkey. The palace was built for the Ottoman princess Adile Sultan (1825-1898), the daughter of Sultan Mahmud II (1785-1839) and the sister of the Sultans Abdülmecid (1823-1861) and Abdülaziz (1830-1876), by the legendary Armenian architect Sarkis Balyan. It was erected on the same place of a kiosk, which was presented to her by Sultan Abdülmecid in 1856.

The palace was commissioned by Sultan Abdülaziz and built by the renowned court architect Sarkis Balyan in 1861. It stands at one of the most glorious places, on a hill, which is a headland in the middle of Bosphorus on the Asian shore. This location enables a wonderful panoramic view of Bosphorus reaching from Sea of Marmara to Black Sea seen out of all the rooms in three sides of the building. The palace with 55 rooms was on a ground of 17,000 m2.

Adile Sultan, a great and the only Turkish royal female poet having a Diwan, lived here until the death of her husband Mehmet Ali Pasha in 1868. She donated her residence to the state to be used as a high school for girls after her death in 1898. Before it was used as determined, the palace came a short while under the control of Ministry of War during World War I. Only in 1916, it could be turned to a secondary school for girls and the first graduates left the school in 1920.

The school was named 1924 after its location, Kandilli Secondary School. In 1931, the school became Kandilli High School for Girls, a respected educational institution since then. The classes of the high school moved to a new building in 1969. The old palace was used as dormitory for boarding girls of the school until 1986, when it was burnt down due to an electrical short-circuit. The historic building became a ruin consisting of only four walls.

SAKIP SABANCI KANDİLLİ EDUCATION AND CULTURE CENTER

Some alumni of Kandilli High School established soon a foundation, and raised funds to rebuild the palace. However, the cost of the restoration exceeded their extent. With the huge financial support of the late businessman and philanthropist Sakıp Sabancı and the Governor of İstanbul, the restoration work could continue. The lacking funds to accomplish the long-lasting and painstaking restoration works were donated again by Sakıp Sabancı in his sickbed three days before his death in 2004.

Adile Sultan Palace was rebuilt in ten years, and it revived after twenty years by reopening with a ceremony, which took place on June 28, 2006. The building is named "Sakıp Sabancı Kandilli Education and Culture Center".

Abraham Pasha, originally Abraham Eramyan, (Istanbul, 1833 - Istanbul, 1918) was an Ottoman civil servant and diplomat of Armenian origin. The son of an Armenian banker family, he was a close friend of Sultan Abdülaziz. He spoke fluently Turkish, Arabic and French, and was a prominent figure of Pera high society in Istanbul.

1883 marked the beginning of Pasha's financial decline, he was financially ruined and unable to repay his debts. Abraham Pasha was forced to surrender his investments on the Bourse and all his properties to the Ottoman Bank in 1898. His personal properties were sold by the bank in 1919 to a stockbroker named Manouk Manoukian.

Located in the Beykoz District on the Asian side of Istanbul and stretching from the hills between Beykoz and Paşabahçe to Riva, the grove, which dates from the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, was designed by French landscape architects and pavilions, pools, theaters and birdhouses were built. Spanning over 69 acres, Beykoz Grove is one of the largest groves on the Bosporus. Today, there are two big caves, five pools and a palace ruin.

Beykoz Grove is located in the Beykoz District on the Asian side of Istanbul. The grove dates back to Sultan Abdülhamid II. It was designed by French landscape architects, and pavilions, pools, theaters and birdhouses were built in the park.

The area on which Beykoz Grove Social Facility is located belonged to the famous Ottoman vizier Abraham Pasha and was used for hosting hunting parties. Several plants and trees that were never seen before in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul were brought and planted in the grove.

Istanbul Municipality restored the place according to its original historic fabric in October 2006 and put it into service as Beykoz Grove Social Facility. Having a capacity to accommodate 1,000 people with an outdoor space of 2,783 m2 and restaurant area of 711 m2, the Beykoz Grove Social Facility stands out with its view of the Bosphorus and the environment surrounded by forest and natural beauty.

Protected by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, it was restored in 2006 to serve as the Beykoz Grove Social Facility. Sütlüce is a neighborhood in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Turkey, located at the eastern bank of Golden Horn across Eyüp. İstanbul's main slaughterhouse was situated in Sütlüce. The facility, which caused great air and water pollution to the natural environment at Golden Horn, was abandoned in 1984 after 61 years of service. In accordance with the city's urban redevelopment plan and the transformation of the old slaughterhouse into a modern congress complex, Sütlüce became a center of attraction for real estate investors.

Financed by the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul, the restoration of the slaughterhouse began in 1998 and the Sütlüce Cultural Center (Turkish: Sütlüce Kültür Merkezi) was opened in 2009. It has a fairground of 9,400 m2 (101,000 sq ft), a quayside of 8,250 m2 (88,800 sq ft) with a green space of 17,000 m2 (180,000 sq ft). The complex comprises a concert hall for 3,000 audience, a theatre for 1,100 guests, three movie theatres having a total capacity of 800 people, 14 work halls and a restaurant for 650 people.

Imagine a meeting venue by the sea where urban sounds mingle with the cries of gulls and waves lapping against the shores of the Haliç Congress Center; an unforgettable scenic location where you can take a break from the chaotic city without actually having to leave it. The Center’s unique setting along the banks of the Haliç, also known as ‘the Golden Horn’ presents an unforgettably panoramic and spectacular view of historic İstanbul.

As one of the few venues in the world where indoor, outdoor and waterfront events can be held simultaneously, the Haliç Congress Center stands out with its low-slung architecture. Spread out over an area of 102,000 m2, with 16,000 m2 of outdoor space, the Haliç Congress Center is comprised of four main interconnecting structures called Sadabad, Kuleli, Pera and Haliç.

Capable of accommodating up to 30,000 guests for all types of organizations, the Haliç Congress Center bears the distinction as the convention center which offers the most alternatives available in İstanbul. Its halls, auditoriums, foyers and outdoor areas are the most sought after for holding conventions, meetings, conferences, product launchings, exhibits / fairs, cocktail parties, wedding receptions, film galas and special theatrical performances. Incorporating the latest technological infrastructure, the Haliç Congress Center also hosts the largest auditorium in İstanbul.

Across the road from the Cistern of Aspar you will find this more usual type of covered cistern that is believed to date back to the reign of Emperor Theodosius I (379-395).  It was also used as a workplace for carpenters and a cotton gin before being completely abandoned.  It was then used as a rubbish dump and reopened after seven years of restoration work and now houses a restaurant.

Sultan Cistern is situated in the Çarşamba district of Fatih, Istanbul. Sultan Sarnıç is a historic Byzantine water cistern located in Fatih, believed to have been built during the reign of Emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century AD. Impressive marble columns support the ceiling, which is formed of a series of domes and arches. These columns are topped with elaborate carvings in the Corinthian style. Impressive marble columns support the ceiling, which is formed of a series of domes and arches.

Since acquiring the cistern in the year 2000, the current owners have restored the structure to its original glory (minus the water, of course) and now hire the space for functions such as weddings, engagements, and henna parties. Tourists are advised to phone in advance before visiting, as there may be private functions in progress.
