4. VAKIF HAN BUILDING

4. Vakıf Han which was built in the place of Sultan Abdülhamid I Külliyesi (Islamic-Ottoman social complex) is one of the prominent works of main representative of National Architecture Movement; Architecture Kemalettin Bey. It was built in the late period of Ottoman Empire in order to meet the dense requirements for the office blocks convenient for the contemporary life.

This building; constructed between 1911 and 1926, is the most beautiful and magnificent among the similar ones. It was not completed because of the war, its outer side was completed during the Conquer of Istanbul, but in spite of being incomplete, it was used as headquarters by the France under the name of "Caserne Victor".

The entrance of the 4.Vakıf Han facing Hamidiye Mosque is 76,70 meters width and 27,21 meters height. The depth of the building in the widest part of the building which is constructed partially adjacent to the neighbour buildings in the Western direction is 32,43 meters. Inner courtyard is 35, 32 meters length, 5, 20 meters width. The courtyard is divided into two parts by a flush over the 1st floor. On the level of this flush; the lower part covered by glaze with metal construction, is similar to the outer part in terms of richness of marble coverings, woodworks and meticulous craft.

The outer sides are designed as ashlars stone and marble overlay in the west, coast and east directions; the north front, which is designed simpler, is left with plaster over the brick wall. Roof covering is of Marseilles tile. The architectural construction of the inn had been considered under the steel structure system and it has 7 floors with the basement.

The side fronts are built of ashlars stone; the divisor walls and back front are built of brick. Asbet tablets cover the roof. The two entrances located symmetrically on the ground floor are opened to the ends of a passage shaped as “U”. The stairs and elevators that are placed on the corners of this passage are linked to the upstairs. The two domed rooms built flat in the corners of the roof provide a tower appearance to these parts.

In architecture, arch corners and the piers in locked stones, muqarnas in cubali cantilever, medallion and Julian patterns, Turkish triangles on the windows of first floor; muqarnas flushes on the windows of third floor; blue-white china on the corners of arches of the fourth floor; between the arches of the upper floor marble pillars in the shape of diamond and the muqarnas, palmate patterned cornices reflects the decoration insight of the style.

4.Vakıf Han is an architectural monument with the rooms with high ceilings, the corridors that are appropriate for long walks, the pillars decorated with ashlars, stone carved balconies, wall ornaments, stair head and bars and aesthetic windows. From the upper floors of 4.Vakıf Han; the Golden Horn’s and Bosphorus’ junction part, Beyazıt Tower and Mosque silhouettes provides a magnificent visual feast. The domed towers formed an important visual beauty both in narrow streets of Sirkeci and the changing urban silhouette of contemporary Istanbul.

Opened in November 2007 at Eminönü district near the Spice Market, the museum is housed in an old building of one of the oldest banks of Turkey, Is Bank, founded by Atatürk. There is a big collection of many documents, photos, films and objects collected since the foundation of the Is Bank, showing the economic and cultural heritage of Turkey and its recent history.

The museum is located in the business quarter of Fatih municipality in İstanbul. Its distance to Haliç (Golden Horn) is about 200 metres (660 ft). The main entrance is on Bankalar Street, a busy street to the southeast of the museum.

İşbank (more formally Türkiye İş Bankası) was founded in 1924 . Although there were other banks which were established during the Ottoman Empire (pre 1922) era, İşbank was the first to be established in Republican era. One of the founders of the museum was Mustafa Kemal Atatürk the founder of Turkish Republic.

The building of the museum was constructed in 1892 as the main post office. In 1917 the building was sold to a local bank and in 1927 when the local bank was bought by İşbank, the building became the İstanbul branch office of İşbank. In 1950s when other branch offices in İstanbul were opened, the branch office was renamed Yeni Camii (“New Mosque”) referring to New Mosque which is to almost adjacent to the building. The branch office was in use till 2004. In 2005 İşbank decided to establish a museum. After renewal, the museum was opened to public on 14 October 2007.

In basement, the former archive rooms are designed as a museum depot and a conference room. The deposit boxes are kept to be displayed. The cash desks in the ground floor are kept as they were and the former security rooms are redesigned as a bookshop and an information desk. The main show rooms are in the first floor.

Sultan Abdülhamid I Complex is situated in Bahçekapı. Its construction was initiated between 1775-1776 in the period of Sultan Abdülhamid I and completed in 1789. Its architecture is Mehmed Tahir Ağa.

Sultan Abdülhamid I (1774-1789) was built in 1776-1777 by the İmaret forms a part. Sultan Abdülhamid I wanted to build a mosque, but the most populous district of the city, such as the Yeni Mosque near the great temple conduct a soup kitchen, and thought it would be better for charitable establishment has done. İmaret side of this madrasa, dispenser, drinking fountain, the library added.

The madrasah (moslem theological school) part of the Sultan Abdülmecid I complex is used as the Istanbul Commodity Exchange today. The complex is the last one build by a pasha and its construction was finished in 1780. The madrasah as a building has the distinct characteristic of being build as an independent building with a basement, unlike the previous ones, which they were always connected to a mosque.

ISTANBUL COMMODITY EXCHANGE

The establishment of the Istanbul Commodity Exchange, was envisaged for the first time in 1880. However, this establishment could not have been realized for a long time due to some problems. At that time, the foundation of a commodity exchange had been entrusted to the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. The legal procedure was supplied with the Regulation of Commodity Exchanges in 1886.

Hence, the establishment of the commodity exchange has been retarded. That delay was probably caused by the unwillingness of merchants in Istanbul to join that kind of institution which imposes some regulations which force them to make trade by following determined procedures and tariffs. Because of all these factors and the wars occurred at the time of the events, commodity exchange could not have been established at the period of Ottoman Empire.

With the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey, the subject had come to the agenda again by the proposition of some members of Parliament in respect of Denizli. The Istanbul Cereals and Commodity Exchange has legally been established on 19 October 1924.

With the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey, the subject had come to the agenda again by the proposition of some members of Parliament in respect of Denizli. The Istanbul Cereals and Commodity Exchange has legally been established on 19 October 1924.

Instantly, since there was not a laboratory to inspect the crops, the construction of a new building started in May 1926. Cereals, pulse and oilseeds were inspected and published on boards. The Istanbul Livestock Exchange was opened separately from the commodity exchange on 13 February 1929 although the Istanbul Commodity Exchange had been very active in its establishment.

The Istanbul Livestock Exchange which had been operating in Karaagaç, has been abolished. All documentation has been transferred to the Istanbul Commodity Exchange by October 1943.

The name of "Animal Exchange" has been changed as "The Agency of Butchery Affairs". In 1988, with the Haliç Cleaning and Redeveloppement Project, it has been decided to move this slaughterhouse to Tuzla/Aydınköy. The Istanbul Commodity Exchange Livestock Establishment was opened at Tuzla/Aydınköy on 26 January 1989.
