THE GALLERY of HISTORICAL CAIQUES

In İstanbul, sea transport along the Bosphorus and Golden Horn is essential. This need was addressed by the Ottomans with the development of watercraft unique to their world. Among such watercraft were the Imperial and Court caiques, the latter used by the palace staff, as well as the piyade (light rowboats), pereme (heavy rowboats), Pazar kayığı (market boat), and various excursion boats. Examples of some of these vessels can be seen in the Gallery of Historical Caiques.

The majority of the collection consists of 19th-century Imperial caiques with and without kiosks (stern pavilions) that served the Sultan and his harem. The numbers of oars used were an important feature in their classification. Decorative floral carvings at the bow and stern indicate that the vessel served the harem, while weaponry, coat-of-arms, and shields designate a sultan's caique. In these decorations select examples of Turkish arts of calligraphy, decorative painting, relief carving, marquetry, inlay work, and fretwork are well reflected.

The small boats used by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, at his Florya mansion and at the Ankara Gazi Agricultural Station, are lap-strake built with mahogany planking. In contrast with the magnificence of the Imperial caiques, the practical and plain features these small boats symbolize the modest nature of the Republican era. The caique belonging to Atatürk.

In 19th century Çerağan Palace with its environs, painter: Seyfettin Soysalan, oil paint, 66 x 99 cm
Seam covered The Imperial caiques were built at the Imperial Naval Arsenal in İstanbul with timber brought from such places as İzmit, Yalova, Sarıçayır, Karamürsel, Akhisar, and Geyve. They were traditionally carvel built, but later examples employed lap-strake construction introduced from northern Europe.

Crescent formed The diversity of decorative elements visible on the Museum's caique collection is a result of the various styles employed and the periods in which they were executed. For example, caiques built during the reign of Adülmecid (1839-1861) carry a long, beak-shaped prow known as "kemanebaş", while those of the Sultan Abdülaziz era (1861-1876) display in addition an upward spiraling carved decoration, giving the prow a hook-shaped appearance called "kancabaş". The caiques of Sultan Mehmed Reşat V (1909-1918) are characterized by the presence of crescents carved in reliefs on the sides of the vessel.

Kiosk roof dome Kiosk section of the galley of the other vessels, the Galley dating to the 17th century is the largest and one of the oldest pieces in the collection. Used during the reign of Mehmet IV (1648-1687), it is 40 meters long and 5.7 meters at the beam, and was rowed by 144 rowers. The galley is constructed of chestnut, hornbeam, and oriental plane woods and is painted a red-brown color. Both the interior and exterior of the kiosk is inlaid with tortoise shell, mother-of-pearl, ebony, and ivory, and ornamented with semi-precious stones set in silver studs. Its calligraphic inscriptions embellished with carnation and tulip motifs, the kiosk represents one of the most important examples of the art of Ottoman mother-of-pearl inlaying.

The throne used at the Naval Academy. Additionally, rigging elements from Ottoman sailing warships, tackle, figureheads, ornamental monograms of the sultans, ship's furniture, as well as panoramic engravings and watercolors depicting maritime aspects of İstanbul, and the throne used at the Naval Academy by Sultan Mahmut II (1808-1839) and later, are exhibited in this gallery.

The Istanbul Naval Museum (Turkish: İstanbul Deniz Müzesi) is a national naval museum of the Republic of Turkey, located in Istanbul. It was established in 1897 by the Ottoman Minister of Navy Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Paşa. The museum contains an important collection of military artifacts pertaining to the Ottoman Navy. It is Turkey's largest museum, with a great variety of collections. Around 20.000 pieces are present in its collection. Being connected to the sea-forces commander in Turkey, it is also the country's first military museum.

HISTORY

The Istanbul Naval Museum is the most comprehensive museum of its kind in Turkey. With its extraordinarily rich and varied collection, numbering some 20,000 pieces, it is among the major museums of the world. The Naval Museum operates under the Commander of the Navy and was the first military museum founded in Turkey.

With orders of the Naval Commander-in-Chief Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha and the support of the Commander of the Imperial Naval Arsenal Admiral Arif Hikmet Pasha, the Naval Museum was founded in 1897 by Commander Süleyman Nutki in the Imperial Naval Arsenal (now Taşkızak Shipyard in Hasköy, İstanbul), as the Museum and Library Administration Office.

At first the museum opened its doors mainly as a repository of unclassified objects. However, in 1914 the Minister of the Navy Cemal Pasha, as he had realized with all other aspects of the Navy, renovated both the museum and its administration when he appointed Lieutenant Ali Sami Boyar Director. A maritime artist, Boyar subsequently reorganized the museum collections scientifically, established a ship-model workshop for building models and half-models of Turkish ships, and a workshop to manufacture human figures for museum displays, all integral steps in the development of the museum to its present status.

At the beginning of World War II, the collections were moved to Anatolia for safekeeping. After the war, the museum collections were returned to İstanbul in 1946, this time to a more suitable building complex of the Dolmabahçe Mosque. Following two years of preparation by the Museum Director Haluk Şehsuvaroğlu, the new museum was opened to the public on 27 September 1948.

With the widening of Dolmabahçe Avenue, it was necessary to relocate the museum once again. It was moved a short distance in 1961 to its current location in Beşiktaş, next to the tomb and monument of Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha (Barbarossa).
