Across the road from the Cistern of Aspar you will find this more usual type of covered cistern that is believed to date back to the reign of Emperor Theodosius I (379-395).  It was also used as a workplace for carpenters and a cotton gin before being completely abandoned.  It was then used as a rubbish dump and reopened after seven years of restoration work and now houses a restaurant.

Sultan Cistern is situated in the Çarşamba district of Fatih, Istanbul. Sultan Sarnıç is a historic Byzantine water cistern located in Fatih, believed to have been built during the reign of Emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century AD. Impressive marble columns support the ceiling, which is formed of a series of domes and arches. These columns are topped with elaborate carvings in the Corinthian style. Since acquiring the cistern in the year 2000, the current owners have restored the structure to its original glory (minus the water, of course) and now hire the space for functions such as weddings, engagements, and henna parties. Tourists are advised to phone in advance before visiting, as there may be private functions in progress.
